Cognitive Engineer
The Cognitive Engineer will drive the intersection of business strategy and user experience issues as they relate to product design. This involves deconstructing business objectives from a user perspective, conducting task analysis and facilitating user interface design sessions. The ideal candidate will be passionate about human centered design and bring at least 4 years of industry experience in user-centered design to a multidisciplinary corporate environment.
Responsibilities include: Conducting ethnographic research, interpreting and delivering results to meet business and design specifications. Prototype and user test web, software and product designs (including hardware). Conceive, set, and implement user interface guidelines and standards. Apply cognitive psychology and human computer interaction techniques and principles to complex evaluation and design situations. Help drive the user-centered design process in a client company. Mentor and train clients in best practice of web and software usability.
Qualifications: Masters or PhD in Cognitive Science, Information Science, or Anthropology with an emphasis on psychology, perception and human information processing. MBA a plus. 4 years or more of industry experience in user-centered design or usability engineering with a daily responsibility for user experience issues. Candidates should have a strong understanding of the User Centered Design process and work comfortably in a multidisciplinary team to deliver designs that meet customer needs, product goals, and tight schedules. Consultant should be comfortable presenting findings to senior management of Fortune 500 firms.
Required: Effective communication and business focus. Flexibility, curiosity and creativity. Ability to think and play in “meta” mode (thinking about what you are thinking about). In depth knowledge of user interface design guidelines, interaction design guidelines, task analysis, web usability best practice and the software development process. Proficiency with various design tools (Adobe PhotoShop or Illustrator, Visio etc.) Ability to rapidly prototype non-HTML user interface mock-ups. Ability to think outside the box and maintain outstanding client relationships.
